At the 2023 AIESEP International Conference “Emerging Horizons: Bridging Borders Between Physical Education Research and Practice” in Santiago de Chile, the PhysEd Academy project led an insightful symposium titled “Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Signature Pedagogies: An International Perspective.”
This symposium presented the main findings of the PhysEd Academy project, focusing on signature pedagogies—the distinctive approaches to teaching that define teacher preparation in physical education. The session highlighted a scoping review of current literature and showcased examples of PETE signature pedagogies from institutions in Ireland, Spain, and Turkey.
By examining these pedagogies through Shulman’s (2005) framework of surface, deep, and implicit structures, the symposium provided valuable insights into how physical education teacher education can evolve to support effective teaching and learning about teaching.
